Natural Gas Conversion Basics

Anyone within the Washington Gas service territory may be able to convert to natural gas. If your home is near one of our gas mains, you may be able to receive gas service, if you agree to convert both your furnace and water heater. In some cases, a conversion deposit may be necessary to defer the cost of the installation.

There are Five Easy Steps to Convert to Natural Gas:

  1. Determine Availability
Call 703-941-HEAT or toll-free 888-941-HEAT to convert to natural gas. You will need to provide your name, complete address (including zip code) and phone number. Other pertinent information includes the square footage of your home, the nearest intersecting streets, and what gas appliances you are planning to convert. Once Washington Gas has obtained this information, we will let you know if gas is available. If a deposit is required, we will determine if some of the cost can be defrayed by installing additional gas appliances.

  2. Contractor and Equipment Selection
In order to begin the conversion process, you will need to send us a copy of a signed contract with the heating contractor who will be installing your new gas appliance(s). The heating contractor must detail the number, type and BTU rating of the gas appliances you are proposing to install. The heating contractor also must specify what kind of pipe will be used inside your home and the desired location of the gas meter. The heating contractor will provide you with a letter of intent* that must be submitted with the contract to Washington Gas. If a deposit is required, it too will need to be included. The contract, letter of intent and deposit (if required) should be sent to:

  3. Design Phase
All gas installations are subject to Washington Gas obtaining the necessary permits and easements. Once Washington Gas receives the required information and permits, we will notify the contractor and proceed with the design and measurement for your gas service installation.

  4. Installation of Gas Service
We will coordinate with the utility locating service to mark the public underground utilities as required by law. You should locate and mark private underground utilities such as sprinkler systems or lighting systems prior to service installation. Finally, we will schedule the installation of your natural gas service.

  5. Meter Installation
Once the installation of the underground line is completed, contact your heating contractor to have the interior gas piping installed and inspected. Make sure your heating contractor confirms the installation of the gas service with Washington Gas prior to removing your existing appliances. After your new equipment and piping is installed, you must call Washington Gas at 703-750-1000 to have your natural gas meter installed. Certain appliances may require separate metering (gaslights, pool heaters and back-up generators).

Email or call 703-941-HEAT or toll free 1-888-941-HEAT today and enjoy the benefits of natural gas service in your home. We're Washington Gas... giving you energy, plus the time to use it.
